Im Nachklang

'Im Nachklang' is a concert for voice and piano that revolves around the artistic legacy of Joachim Raff (1822–1882).

A brilliant 19th-century composer who was also highly regarded as a teacher—this is how the musician, who was born in Lachen (SZ), can be described in a nutshell.

Raff was largely self-taught. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy recommended him to the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house, which encouraged Raff to devote himself entirely to composing. Later, Raff also met Franz Liszt, for whom he worked as an assistant in Weimar from 1850 to 1853. In 1878, Raff finally became the first director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main.

For about an hour, our journey to discover his legacy will be accompanied by songs that are not often heard in today's concert halls. In this project, we compare pieces by Raff with those by six of his most brilliant students, as well as by Clara Schumann, his colleague at the Hoch Conservatory.

Using recordings by Raff himself, his colleagues, and his students, we aim to revive the atmosphere and charm of those years in order to keep his influential and talented personality alive.
