Zum rothen Igel
The restaurant “Zum Rothen Igel” was famous in Vienna at the end of the 19th century: it was apparently frequented by many musicians, especially Johannes Brahms, who is said to have loved the beef goulash. And who knows, perhaps the four central composers of our project (the Piedmontese Sinigaglia, the Hamburg-born Brahms, the Bohemian Dvořák and the Romanian-Ukrainian Mandyczewski) actually met in this beautiful restaurant one day.
Our program compares different approaches of the late 19th century, first the folk song, genuine and wise, and later the art song, a refined melisma with many colors. The whole project was motivated by our curiosity as young Turiners about a composer from our city, Leone Sinigaglia, and his wanderings through Europe. He was a friend, confidant, apprentice and great admirer of his three other colleagues, which prompted us to bring them together in a single concert.
Music and poetry will be the protagonists of a journey through the roots of a Europe united by its culture as much as by its languages.
