Zum rothen Igel
Zum “Roter Igel” is a concert for voice and piano that revolves around the figure of Leone Sinigaglia. This interesting composer originally came from Turin in Italy and moved to Vienna to further his education. There he met the other three protagonists of our project: Johannes Brahms, Eusebius Mandyczewski, and Antonín Dvořák.
The title of the concert refers to a restaurant in Vienna that was known in the 19th century for being frequented by artists such as Brahms.
In this atmosphere, examples of art songs are compared with folk songs for about 60 minutes – genres that the four composers have in common. In particular, one can appreciate Sinigaglia's versatility, who composed songs in German and revived the Piedmontese musical tradition like a true philologist.
Short spoken contributions will be interspersed throughout the concert. The audience will learn about Sinigaglia's travels and friendships with Brahms, Mandyczewski, and Dvořák, so that their music can still be heard today and their dialogue continues.
